Born to a Neapolitan father who worked as a journalist and an Estonian mother named Ilse Renate Krause, a sculptor with Estonian heritage on her paternal side and Russian ancestry from St. Petersburg on her maternal side, Muti grew up in a creatively inclined household. She has an older sister, Claudia Rivelli, who is also an actress and performed in photo novels during the 1970s. Muti is the mother of actress Naike Rivelli.
