Rachael Taylor was born on July 11, 1984, in Launceston, Tasmania, to parents Christine and Nigel Taylor. She pursued her education at Riverside High School and Trevallyn Primary School. From a young age, Taylor aspired to be an actress, immersing herself in modeling and beauty pageants before stepping into the realm of acting. She completed her high school education at Riverside in 2000.

In her early career, Taylor worked as a model for Skye-Jilly International and showcased her talent by competing in the state finals of Miss Teen Tasmania in 1998. She gained visibility in various American productions, including television films about Natalie Wood and the behind-the-scenes drama of Dynasty, where she portrayed Catherine Oxenberg. Taylor also appeared in the horror films Man-Thing and See No Evil. She took on the role of Sasha Forbes in the brief Australian drama series headLand and earned a Logie Award nomination for Most Popular New Female Talent in 2006 for her work on the show.

One of her most notable performances came in 2007 when she starred as Maggie Madsen, a signals analyst, in the blockbuster Transformers, featuring alongside Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf. However, Taylor opted not to return for the sequel. The following year, she landed a leading role in Shutter, a U.S. horror-thriller that was a remake of the 2004 Thai film, co-starring Joshua Jackson. Despite receiving mixed critical responses, the film performed well at the box office. In 2009, she completed the Australian feature film Cedar Boys and starred in the comedy Splinterheads. She continued her career in 2010 with a role in the romantic drama Summer Coda alongside Alex Dimitriades.

Taylor was also involved in the HBO comedy projects Washingtonienne and Melt. She began a recurring role on Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Lucy Fields, specializing in obstetrics. In 2011, she became part of the cast in a short-lived revival of Charlie's Angels, had a significant role in the film Red Dog, and featured in the Russian sci-fi thriller The Darkest Hour, directed by Chris Gorak.

In 2012, she had a supporting role in the Australian comedy Any Questions for Ben?, where despite the film's mixed reception, her performance was noted for its warmth and confidence. From 2012 to 2013, Taylor starred in the drama series 666 Park Avenue, followed by a role in the NBC series Crisis, which lasted only one season. In 2015, she took on the character Trish Walker, the best friend of the title character in Jessica Jones. She would later reprise this role in several related series, including voiceover appearances in Luke Cage and The Defenders, and in the subsequent seasons of Jessica Jones.

In 2014, she had a part in The Loft, a remake of a 2008 film, working alongside fellow Australian Isabel Lucas
