Über Sophie Thatcher
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 18, 2000, Sophie Bathsheba Thatcher spent her formative years in a Mormon household before eventually departing from the faith. She has shared that her upbringing within the church was challenging, noting, "It was hard growing up Mormon," and further explained, "I don’t think it’s evil, I just don’t think it’s right for me. But as a kid it just made me so angry. Working was a good way to get out of going to church." Thatcher is one of four siblings, with an older sister, an older brother, and an identical twin named Ellie. Her family was musically inclined; she recalled singing in a church choir while her mother played the piano. Singing was a part of her childhood from a young age, and she began acting at the age of four. She attended The Chicago Academy for the Arts, a performing arts school specializing in musical theatre. Her experience in front of the camera eventually led her to focus more on acting than singing.
Thatcher’s professional journey began with a guest spot on the police drama Chicago P.D. in 2016, a part of the larger Chicago franchise. Later that same year, she appeared in an episode of Fox’s supernatural horror series The Exorcist, portraying a younger iteration of the character Regan MacNeil. Prior to these television roles, she starred in the 2015 short film Growing Strong. Her cinematic debut arrived in 2018 with the science fiction film Prospect, in which she shared the screen with Pedro Pascal. The movie centers on a teenage girl and her father navigating a dangerous alien moon to mine valuable gems within a toxic forest. Her portrayal earned her considerable praise, with Variety's Peter Debruge highlighting her as "a fresh face who tricks us into assuming she's just a callow teen, when in fact, she proves to be the film's toughest character." The subsequent year saw her feature in Noble Jones' directorial debut, The Tomorrow Man.
Around this period, Thatcher secured the role of Natalie in the series Yellowjackets. The show's creators sought an actress who was "really free-spirited and unique who could play both a sort of wildness and a vulnerability." While many auditions took place in person, Thatcher submitted a self-recorded tape and was cast as Natalie before Juliette Lewis, who plays the adult version of the character. The pilot episode received a green light in September and was filmed in Los Angeles in November 2019. In 2020, Thatcher took a leading role in When the Streetlights Go On, a short-form streaming series directed by Rebecca Thomas, which premiered on Quibi on April 6. Rumors circulated in November 2020 about her potential involvement in the Star Wars universe, though the specific series remained unclear. By December 2020
