Agnes Lum — Biography

Born May 21, 1956, Agnes Nalani Lum carved out a niche as a prominent American figure in Japanese entertainment during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her career spanned gravure modeling, singing, and acting, with a particular focus on bikini modeling that made her a beloved personality. In Japan, she was affectionately known as "Lum-chan." This moniker later presented a potential for confusion with Lum Invader, a fictional character from the anime and manga series Urusei Yatsura. Indeed, Agnes Lum served as the creative spark for the character's name, as she was already quite famous when the manga first debuted in 1977. To distinguish her from Agnes Chan, another popular idol of the era, the nickname "Lum-chan" was often employed, although many admirers referred to both by the shared name "Agnes." Lum's presence was ubiquitous, gracing countless calendars, posters, and magazine features. These collectible items continue to be sought after and command considerable value in the market today.
