Aliaa Elmahdy — Biography

Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, born on November 16, 1991, is an Egyptian figure recognized for her activism online and her advocacy for women's rights. She gained public attention after sharing a nude photograph on her blog. She explained this act on social media as a protest against a society rife with violence, discrimination, sexism, sexual harassment, and pretense. Following this, she received numerous threats against her life. Elmahdy characterizes herself as an Egyptian who is secular, liberal, feminist, vegetarian, and an individualist, and she has identified as an atheist since the age of sixteen.
