Chandra North — Biography
Born under the Texas sky in Dallas on July 31, 1973, Chandra North embarked on a journey that would lead her far beyond her initial dreams of pirouettes and pointe shoes. As a young woman, her spirit leaned towards the unconventional; while peers might have been at school dances, she found herself drawn to the pulsing energy of underground clubs during her teenage years. Her path took a significant turn while she was a student at Southern Methodist University. During a spring break excursion, a male model recognized her potential and approached her. This encounter proved to be a catalyst, and soon she was signed with The Kim Dawson Agency in Dallas, finding early success with local newspaper features and department store catalog work.
In 1991, North set her sights on a professional dancing career, leaving her Texas roots behind for the vibrant scene of New York City. Her trajectory, however, soon shifted back to modeling, which took her across the Atlantic to Paris. After a period of challenging work in Europe, she returned to New York, where she met the man who would become her husband, then working as a bicycle messenger. His encouragement proved invaluable as her modeling opportunities began to expand.
North's career gained significant traction in 1995 when she appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, notably sporting a bikini made of grass. This led to a string of high-profile campaigns for esteemed brands such as Alberta Ferretti, Versace, Saks Fifth Avenue, Givenchy, J.Crew, Valentino, Chanel, and Banana Republic. She also showcased her presence on the runways for fashion houses including Christian Dior, DKNY, and Chanel. Her image graced the covers of prestigious magazines like Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, and Harper's Bazaar. In 1999, North was selected for the iconic Pirelli Calendar. Currently, she is represented by DNA Model Management, FM Model Agency, and the Kim Dawson Agency. A notable moment in her career came in 2012, when she was chosen as the print model to commemorate Shiseido's 140th anniversary.
