Charlotte Rampling — Biography

Charlotte Rampling, born on February 5, 1946, is an esteemed English actress celebrated for her contributions to European cinema, delivering performances in English, French, and Italian. Emerging as a symbol of the vibrant 1960s, her career commenced in the world of modeling. Her acting journey gained momentum with her part as Meredith in the 1966 film Georgy Girl, sharing the screen with Lynn Redgrave.

Rampling soon ventured into French and Italian art films, making a significant mark with Luchino Visconti's The Damned in 1969 and Liliana Cavani's The Night Porter in 1974. Her extensive filmography includes numerous European and English-language productions such as Stardust Memories (1980), The Verdict (1982), Long Live Life (1984), and The Wings of the Dove (1997). The new millennium saw her become a frequent collaborator and muse for French director François Ozon, notably appearing in his film Swimming Pool (2003). On the small screen, she is recognized for her portrayal of Dr. Evelyn Vogel in Dexter (2013).

In 2002, Rampling explored musical expression with a cabaret-style album titled As a Woman. Her talent in the miniseries Restless earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in 2012. The year 2015 proved particularly successful for her performance in 45 Years, which garnered her the Best Actress awards at the Berlin Film Festival and the European Film Awards, alongside an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In 2017, she was honored with the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 74th Venice International Film Festival for her role in Hannah.

Rampling's international acclaim is further evidenced by an Honorary César in 2001 and France's Legion of Honour in 2002. Her dedication to the arts was recognized with an OBE in 2000. In 2015, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Film Awards. Her life story was chronicled in her 2015 autobiography, Qui Je Suis, written in French, which was later translated into English as Who I Am and published in March 2017.
