Claudia Schiffer — Biography
Claudia Schiffer entered the world on August 25, 1970, in Rheinberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany, as the daughter of Gudrun and Heinz Schiffer, a lawyer. Growing up in a middle-class household in Düsseldorf alongside three siblings named Stefan, Andreas, and Ann Carolin, she initially harbored dreams of practicing law and possessed a reserved personality. Her modeling career began unexpectedly when Michel Levaton, founder of Metropolitan Models, spotted her at age 17 in a Düsseldorf nightclub during 1987. She abandoned her secondary education to relocate to Paris and establish herself as a model. Strongly connected to her roots, Schiffer has consistently highlighted her German heritage and maintained a bond with her birthplace. Though professionally recognized by her birth name, she uses the surname De Vere Drummond in her private life following marriage. Commentators frequently compared her to Brigitte Bardot early on, earning her the moniker "The Blonde Bombshell." Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Schiffer achieved superstardom as a member of "The Big 10," a celebrated cohort of supermodels including Elle MacPherson, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, and Kate Moss, during an era when entertainment prominence rivaled runway and editorial achievements. Her striking appearance graced more than 1,000 magazine covers spanning Vogue editions from multiple countries, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Rolling Stone, and Time. The pivotal moment arrived with Guess Jeans advertisements in 1989, followed by a Chanel runway appearance in 1990. She represented luxury houses including Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, L'Oréal, and Revlon, modeling for labels such as Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, and Christian Dior. A memorable 1990 Vogue cover featured her alongside Turlington, Campbell, Evangelista, and Patitz, and she featured prominently in George Michael's Freedom! '90 music video. Current work includes appearances in Vogue Germany and a 2024 Chanel campaign. Throughout her career, she has represented Metropolitan Models in Paris, Elite Model Management, d'management group in Milan, and IMG Models. Her editorial contributions span numerous prestigious publications including Vogue iterations, Harper's Bazaar, W, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Vanity Fair.
