Elaine Thompson — Biography
Born Elaine Sandra-Lee Thompson on June 28, 1992, Elaine Thompson-Herah is a Jamaican track and field athlete specializing in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Considered one of the finest female sprinters ever, she has claimed five Olympic gold medals, earning the distinction of being the world's fastest woman currently and ranking second in all-time history over both her signature distances. Her ascent to the global stage occurred at the 2015 World Athletics Championships, where she secured a silver medal in the 200 meters. Thompson-Herah etched her name in history as the first woman, and the second sprinter after Usain Bolt, to achieve the "sprint double" – winning both the 100m and 200m – at two consecutive Olympic Games, first at the 2016 Rio Olympics and then again at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Following her victories in 2016, a period of injury hampered her efforts at the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships. However, she made a triumphant return at the Tokyo Games, successfully defending her 100m title with a new Olympic record of 10.61 seconds. She also retained her 200m crown, setting a personal best of 21.53 seconds. In her initial race after the Olympics, she further improved her 100m personal best to 10.54 seconds, and subsequently ran times of 10.64 and 10.65 seconds. This remarkable sequence makes her the only female athlete to have recorded four legal times below 10.70 seconds in the 100 meters. As one of the most dominant forces in sprinting, Thompson-Herah holds four of the ten fastest legal 100m times ever recorded. Her accolades also include the 2019 Pan American Games 100m championship and three Diamond League victories.
