Elena Dementieva — Biography
Elena Dementieva, born October 15, 1981, is a retired Russian tennis professional. Her distinguished career was highlighted by a singles gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, adding to the silver she secured at the 2000 Sydney Games. Over her career, Dementieva captured 16 WTA singles championships. She also reached the championship match of two Grand Slam tournaments in 2004, the French Open and the US Open, and advanced to seven additional Grand Slam semifinals. Dementieva was a key member of the victorious Russian team in the 2005 Fed Cup. In doubles competition, she triumphed at the 2002 WTA Championships alongside Janette Husárová and was a finalist in two US Open doubles finals, first with Husárová in 2002 and then with Flavia Pennetta in 2005. Dementieva attained a career-best singles ranking of world No. 3 on April 6, 2009. Her professional tennis journey concluded with her retirement announcement on October 29, 2010, following her final match at the 2010 WTA Championships. Notably, from 2003 to 2010, she finished the year ranked within the top 10 on all but one occasion, that being 2007. Dementieva is often recognized as one of the most gifted players never to have claimed a Grand Slam singles title.
