Eliza Coupe — Biography

Hailing from Plymouth, New Hampshire, Eliza Coupe's early years were spent in the embrace of her hometown, where she was nurtured by parents Ernest and Kathryn. She shares her life with two brothers, Sam and Thom. Her formative years at Plymouth Regional High School saw her flourish in the drama department, leaving her mark with performances as Bonnie in Anything Goes and a Mundy sister in Dancing at Lughnasa before her graduation in 1999. Her ancestral tapestry is woven with threads of French, English, and Scottish heritage. She further honed her craft at the California Institute of the Arts, graduating in 2006.

Upon completing her studies, Coupe delved into the world of comedic performance, attending improvisation classes at The Groundlings and ImprovOlympic. Her theatrical journey took her to France in 2003, portraying a soldier in an all-female rendition of King Lear. New York City became the stage for her solo sketch show, The Patriots, which debuted at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in November 2005. This venture earned her the Breakout Performer Award at HBO's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado, in March 2006.

Her television presence began to take shape with an appearance in I Think I Love My Wife and a spot on the short-lived MTV series Short Circuitz. She also lent her talents to an episode of Flight of the Conchords, titled "Girlfriends," and a guest role in Unhitched. Coupe was a fixture in HBO's unaired series 12 Miles of Bad Road and held a recurring part in Samantha Who? Her recurring role as Dr. Denise "Jo" Mahoney on the eighth season of Scrubs extended to the companion web series, Scrubs: Interns, and she became a regular cast member for the show's ninth and final season.

In March 2009, Coupe was selected to play Callie in ABC's pilot, No Heroics, an adaptation of a British series. The independent film Shanghai Calling, filmed in China, saw her take on the leading female role and love interest to Daniel Henney in 2012. She also appeared in the 2011 film What's Your Number? alongside Anna Faris and Chris Evans. From April 2011 to May 2013, Coupe was a central figure in the ABC ensemble comedy Happy Endings, sharing the screen with Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, Adam Pally, Damon Wayans Jr., and Casey Wilson. Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base, the show concluded its run after three seasons. Following Happy Endings, she joined the cast of House of Lies for its third season in a recurring capacity and then starred opposite Jay Harrington in the USA Network comedy Benched, which premiered on October 28, 2014.
