Gia Carangi, an American figure in the fashion world, is often heralded as the inaugural supermodel. Her impact was so significant that in 2023, Harper's Bazaar placed her at fifteenth among the most iconic supermodels of the 1980s. Her striking image graced the covers of many prominent magazines, including various issues of Vogue and Cosmopolitan, and she lent her face to advertising efforts for esteemed fashion houses such as Armani, Dior, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent.

Tragically, Carangi's promising career took a downturn as she developed a heroin addiction, leading her to cease modeling in 1983. Her life was cut short in 1986 when she succumbed to AIDS-related complications at the age of 26. It is believed she contracted the virus through a contaminated needle, making her one of the early, well-known women to pass away from the illness. The compelling narrative of her life was later brought to the screen in Michael Cristofer's 1998 television film Gia, with Angelina Jolie portraying Carangi. Carangi's heritage included Irish, Italian, and Welsh ancestry.
