Prior to her disappearance, Hwang had faced legal issues; he was arrested on June 29, 2007, on charges of assaulting and kidnapping Haley. However, those charges were eventually dismissed, leading to his release on July 3, 2007. Tragically, it was later confirmed that Haley had died in King City, California, a location she had visited with Hwang. A coroner's examination established the date of her passing as August 21, 2007. According to Sgt. Steve Miller from the King City Police Department, Hwang was regarded as having been “implicated” in the circumstances surrounding her death. Following this, the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office revealed that Hwang's body was found on September 29, 2007, in a room at an Economy Inn in Morgan Hill, California. Investigators have stated that his death is “not being considered suspicious.”
