Joanna Gaines, born Joanna Stevens on April 19, 1978, is an American recognized for her work in interior design, her presence on television, and her achievements as an author. She gained prominence as a co-host of the home renovation program Fixer Upper, which debuted on HGTV in 2013, alongside her husband, Chip Gaines. Together, the couple leads the expansive media enterprise known as Magnolia. This brand encompasses an online retail platform, a collaboration with Target for home decor items named Hearth & Hand with Magnolia, the lifestyle publication Magnolia Journal, and the Magnolia Network television channel, which now features Fixer Upper and its related series. Additionally, their ventures include Magnolia Realty, a real estate firm they established in 2003, and the Magnolia App. Gaines has also authored or co-authored seven books that have appeared on The New York Times bestseller list, covering genres from cookbooks and memoirs to home design and children's literature.

Born Joanna Stevens in Wichita, Kansas, on April 19, 1978, she is the daughter of Nan Stevens, a Korean immigrant, and Jerry Stevens, an American of Lebanese and German descent. Her parents' paths first crossed in Seoul, South Korea, in 1969, when Jerry was serving in the United States Army. The family made their home in Austin, Texas, in 1990, when Joanna was twelve. Later, during her junior year of high school, they relocated to Waco, Texas, where her father established a Firestone Tire franchise. Joanna herself appeared in television advertisements for the business. Gaines has shared that during her upbringing, she was frequently the only Asian-American student in her schools, facing instances of bullying. The move to Waco, she noted, improved her situation, and she was eventually selected as homecoming queen by her classmates. Following her high school graduation, Gaines pursued higher education at Baylor University, majoring in communications. Her internships included work at Waco's KWTX television and KWBU radio stations, as well as a semester in New York City interning for the program 48 Hours, then anchored by Dan Rather. She has expressed aspirations of becoming a broadcast journalist. She completed her studies at Baylor in 2001.

In 2001, Chip Gaines, who had attended Baylor at the same time as Joanna in 1998 but had not yet met her, encountered her while she was working at her father's tire shop and recognized her from the commercials. Their relationship began shortly thereafter, and they married in Waco in 2003.
