M.I.A. — Biography

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam MBE, better known as M.I.A., is a British rapper, singer, and record producer whose eclectic sound blends alternative, dance, electronic, hip hop, and world music. She was born in London but moved to Jaffna, Sri Lanka, with her family when she was just six months old. Due to the Sri Lankan Civil War, M.I.A.'s family faced displacement and returned to London as refugees when she was 11, a pivotal experience that shaped her artistic expression.

Initially, she pursued her passion for visual arts, filmmaking, and design in 2000, branching into music two years later. M.I.A. gained attention as one of the earliest artists to utilize the Internet for promotion, achieving underground success in 2004 with tracks like "Sunshowers" and "Galang." Her debut album, Arular, released in 2005, was quickly followed by the critically acclaimed Kala in 2007, which included the chart-topping single "Paper Planes" peaking at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and selling over four million copies.

In 2010, her third release, Maya, was preceded by the controversial single and short film "Born Free," further establishing her presence in the music industry. This album charted impressively and continued her trend of combining genres creatively. Her fourth studio album, Matangi, released in 2013, featured the hit single "Bad Girls," which garnered multiple MTV Video Music Awards. M.I.A. launched her fifth album, AIM, in 2016, and in 2020, she celebrated her first number-one Billboard Hot 100 hit as a featured artist on Travis Scott’s "Franchise." Two years later, she released her sixth studio album, Mata, with the lead single "The One."

Over her career, M.I.A. has received numerous accolades including two ASCAP awards and two MTV Video Music Awards. Notably, she became the first individual of South Asian descent to be nominated for both an Academy Award and a Grammy Award in the same year. Recognized as a pivotal artist of the 2000s by Rolling Stone, Time named her one of the 100 most influential figures in 2009, and Esquire included her on its list of the 75 most influential people of the 21st century. Billboard recognized her as one of the Top 50 Dance/Electronic Artists of the 2010s. In 2019, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music.

M.I.A. is of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage and has been an outspoken advocate for various causes, including the plight of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and the ongoing issues stemming from the Sri Lankan civil war.
