Kathryn, a figure known by her stage name Marilyn Star, has a past that spans the realms of adult entertainment and legal entanglements. Her journey began in Prince George, British Columbia, where a childhood performance saw her dance for Prince Charles. In 1990, she relocated to Edmonton, Alberta, with aspirations of pursuing pre-medicine studies. It was in Edmonton that she adopted the moniker Marilyn Star and began her career as a prominent dancer across Western Canada, from Victoria, British Columbia, to Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Her path then led her to Los Angeles, where she entered the adult film industry. Her debut in this arena occurred in 1994 with the film More Dirty Debutantes 30, alongside Randy West. Over the course of her career, she appeared in a total of ninety films. That same year, she married Japanese businessman Bruce Akahoshi, a union that concluded in divorce after three years.

By December 1999, Marilyn Star faced accusations of insider trading. Prosecutors alleged she utilized non-public bank merger information, obtained from a former lover, investment banker James McDermott, who had previously led the firm Keefe, Bruyette & Woods. She purportedly shared this information with another former partner, businessman Anthony Pomponio, and subsequently used it to illicitly profit an estimated $88,135 in the stock market between May 1997 and August 1998. Foreseeing legal repercussions, Star retreated to Vancouver, beyond the reach of American jurisdiction, where she married stockbroker Michael Gilley in 2000. Her arrest finally came on May 24, 2000, followed by her extradition to the United States. Gilley initiated divorce proceedings on October 13 of that year. Marilyn Star entered a guilty plea to the insider trading charge, agreeing to a three-month sentence at the Women's Correctional Facility in Danbury, Connecticut, commencing on December 2, 2002. She has since withdrawn from public life and resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.
