Mary Ann Mobley — Biography

Born on February 17, 1937, Mary Ann Mobley was a celebrated American actress, television personality, and the reigning Miss America of 1959. Her journey in the spotlight began after her triumphant win in the Miss America pageant. Mobley, who hailed from Biloxi, Mississippi, quickly transitioned into a screen career, signing a substantial five-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Her television debut occurred in 1960 on the program Be Our Guest. She then made several appearances on Burke's Law between 1963 and 1965. In 1966, she took on a significant guest role as the female lead in the inaugural two-part episode of Mission: Impossible, titled "Old Man Out." Mobley's career saw her making multiple guest spots on popular shows like Perry Mason, Love, American Style, and Fantasy Island. She later stepped into the role of Maggie McKinney Drummond for the final season of Diff'rent Strokes, taking over from Dixie Carter. Earlier in that series, she also portrayed Arnold's teacher in season two. In Designing Women, a later series starring Dixie Carter, Mobley guest-starred as Karen Delaporte, a sharp-tongued historical society head who clashed with Carter's character, Julia Sugarbaker.

On the film front, Mobley starred opposite Elvis Presley in two movies released in 1965: Girl Happy and Harum Scarum. Her talent was recognized with the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actress in 1965. Beyond her acting, Mobley was deeply involved in various charitable endeavors and was honored with the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year Award in 1966 by Lady Bird Johnson.

From 1973 to 1977, she frequently appeared as a celebrity panelist on the game show Match Game. In 1978, she and her husband, Gary Collins, appeared together in an episode of The Love Boat, playing Dr. and Mrs. Diller. Between 1984 and 1988, Mobley and Collins co-hosted the Pillsbury Bake-Off on CBS. She was also featured in the 2002 PBS documentary film Miss America, part of the American Experience series. More recently, a portrayal of Mobley appeared in the third season of the Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, with Amanda Dela Cruz playing the role.

Her reign as Miss America in 1959 was historic, marking the first time someone from Mississippi achieved this title. During her pageant year, she also secured the national talent award. In a full-circle moment, Mobley and her husband Gary Collins co-hosted the Miss America pageant in September 1988, celebrating the 30th anniversary of her own victory.
