Mary Ure, a notable British performer, carved her place in cinematic history as the second actress hailing from Scotland to receive an Academy Award nomination. This recognition came for her compelling performance in the 1960 film Sons and Lovers. Ure's life was not without its struggles, as she navigated periods of alcohol dependence and mental health difficulties throughout the early 1970s. Tragically, on the evening of Wednesday, April 2, 1975, mere hours after a celebrated premiere on the London stage alongside Honor Blackman, Ronald Hines, and Brian Blessed in Don Taylor's adaptation of The Exorcism, Ure was discovered deceased. She was 42 years old, and her passing was attributed to an accidental overdose of alcohol and barbiturates. Her husband, Robert Shaw, found her at their London residence.
