Natalie Dormer — Biography
Natalie Dormer entered the world on February 11, 1982, in Reading, Berkshire, England. As an Aquarius, she grew up as the daughter of Gary Dormer, a computer programmer, and Claire Richards, a homemaker, alongside her siblings Samantha and Mark. During her secondary education at Chiltern Edge Secondary School, she distinguished herself as a talented public speaker and later attended Reading Blue Coat School, where she achieved head girl status, academic excellence, and served as vice-captain of the netball squad. Her oratory abilities took her across the country with the school's debate team. She pursued dance training at Allenova School of Dancing while simultaneously experiencing bullying during her school years. Her higher education at Cambridge proved successful overall, though she misinterpreted a question on her A-level History examination and fell short of a top grade. Supported by her parents, she studied dramatic arts at Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where she earned recognition through school productions. Dormer maintains British citizenship and practices Roman Catholicism.
Her professional acting journey began in 2003 with a Shakespearean comedy production before appearing in the film Casanova six months after graduation. A period of unemployment followed, during which she worked as a waitress before recommitting to her craft. The turning point arrived in 2007 when she secured the role of Anne Boleyn in The Tudors, earning critical acclaim before her character's death in season two. Subsequent roles included appearances in Agatha Christie's Why Didn't They Ask Evans and City of Life in 2008. A 2010 stage performance in Sweet Nothing at Young Vic garnered positive reviews, while her film roles expanded to include Madonna's W.E., where she played the Duchess of York, and Captain America: The First Avenger.
Dormer achieved widespread recognition in 2012 upon joining HBO's Game of Thrones as Margaery Tyrell, delivering compelling performances throughout the series until 2016 alongside acclaimed actors including Maisie Williams, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Hannah Murray, Sophie Turner, Jason Momoa, Max von Sydow, and Peter Dinklage. Her filmography encompasses Rush, The Counselor, and Elementary, while she voiced characters in the Game of Thrones video game and Mass Effect: Andromeda. She contributed to the radio drama Neverwhere and maintained an active stage career with roles in Pat, Miss Julie, and Venus in Fur at Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2017. She also appeared in Hozier's music video Someone New in 2015 and played Magda in the 2020 television series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
