Nikki Haley — Biography

Nikki Haley, born Nimarata Randhawa, is a prominent figure in American politics and diplomacy. She held the office of Governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017. Following her gubernatorial tenure, she served as the 29th United States Ambassador to the United Nations for two years, from January 2017 until December 2018. A Republican, Haley achieved a significant milestone as the first Indian American to hold a position in a presidential cabinet. She was a contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Haley departed her role as South Carolina governor to assume the position of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in January 2017. Her appointment was overwhelmingly confirmed by the United States Senate with a 96–4 vote, reflecting broad bipartisan support. She concluded her service as ambassador on December 31, 2018.

Before her ascent to national office, Haley was involved in her family's clothing enterprise. She later contributed to the National Association of Women Business Owners, serving first as treasurer and then as president. Her elected political career began in 2004 when she was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, where she served for three terms. In 2010, during her third term in the state legislature, she was elected Governor of South Carolina and subsequently won re-election in 2014. Haley made history as the first female governor of South Carolina and became the second American state governor of Indian heritage, following Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, also a Republican.

Haley announced her candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential primaries in February 2023, seeking the Republican Party's nomination for President of the United States in the 2024 election. In the early spring of 2024, she withdrew from the presidential race following substantial primary defeats at the hands of her opponent, former President Donald J. Trump. Haley's ancestry traces back to Sikh Indian roots. As of December 2024, her social media presence includes approximately 750,000 followers on Instagram and 20,500 subscribers on her YouTube channel.
