Rayveness — Biography
Gina-Raye Carter, known professionally as Rayveness and occasionally using the alias Karen M. Swaim, entered the world on June 19, 1972. This American performer of German, Irish, British, and Finnish heritage grew up in High Point, North Carolina within a Quaker community. She married while still attending Ragsdale High School and worked various jobs including fast food, childcare, and selling Avon products before launching her adult film career at age eighteen in 1990. Her initial venture into the industry came through a homemade video produced for Homegrown Video, motivated by a television appearance on The Sally Jessy Raphael Show featuring a couple who had achieved financial success through similar work.
Throughout her career, Rayveness performed in approximately 470 films under multiple stage names including Raveness and Ginger. Early in her professional life, she restricted her scenes to performances with her then-husband Red Bone and female performers until their 1997 divorce, after which she expanded her work scope. Her career took an interesting turn between 2000 and 2003 when she stepped back from adult films to pursue mainstream acting roles. During this period, she changed her hair color to red and used alternate identities to maintain distance from her previous work. Notable credits included a 2002 HBO production titled Path to War where she portrayed Lynda Bird Johnson and a 2001 appearance on the ABC series NYPD Blue. Though these dramatic performances demonstrated her skill, mainstream opportunities remained limited, and she returned to adult entertainment in 2003.
As a mature performer, Rayveness became renowned for MILF and cougar roles. In 2009, she signed as Girlfriends Films' inaugural contract performer and achieved Hall of Fame recognition from both XRCO in 2011 and AVN in 2015. Standing five foot three with dark brown hair and blue eyes, she displayed a distinctive appearance throughout her work. Her advocacy extended beyond performance as she petitioned Congressman Brad Sherman in 2004 to raise the industry's age requirement from eighteen to twenty-one, believing young performers lacked sufficient maturity for such consequential decisions. She married adult industry performer Tod Alexander from 1998 to 2003 and later took a career break between 2006 and 2007 to have a son through in vitro fertilization. Following her 2015 retirement, she made brief returns to work during 2020 and 2021 and again from 2021 to 2023. Currently, she maintains an OnlyFans account where she continues creating adult content and engaging with supporters.
