Jessica Stoyadinovich, professionally known as Stoya, arrived on June 15, 1986, in Wilmington, North Carolina. She carries heritage from both Serbian and Scottish ancestry. Her upbringing involved parents from different professional backgrounds, with her father working in information technology and her mother employed as a seamstress. She received homeschooling during her early childhood until reaching age ten, which contributed to developing her autonomous personality. Following her parents' separation, she moved in with her grandmother in Philadelphia and enrolled in an arts-centered high school, though she eventually left formal education. During her teenage years, she supported herself through modeling work and dancing in clubs.

In 2006, at the age of twenty, she transitioned into the adult entertainment field. Her initial involvement came through creating photographs for an independent website operated by a friend based in Philadelphia. This work opened doors to additional modeling opportunities, and she was discovered at an adult industry event by Digital Playground in 2007. She made her first film appearance that same year with a solo performance titled Stoya: Atomic Tease, entering into an exclusive three-year arrangement with the company.
