Susanna Hoffs — Biography
Susanna Hoffs is a multi-talented American singer, guitarist, songwriter, author, and actress. In 1981, she joined forces with Debbi Peterson and Vicki Peterson to form the Bangles. Their debut album, All Over the Place, was released under Columbia Records in 1984. The band's third studio effort, Everything, came out in 1988 and featured the hit singles "In Your Room," which reached the US top ten, and the number one hit "Eternal Flame," both co-written by Hoffs alongside Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Tensions arose within the group, partly due to perceptions of Hoffs as the band's lead figure, leading to their disbandment in 1989. However, the Bangles reunited in 1999, subsequently putting out albums in 2003 and 2011. Hoffs has also been seen on screen, appearing in the films Stony Island (1978) and The Haircut (1982), both of which were written by her mother, Tamar Simon Hoffs. She played a leading role in the comedy The Allnighter (1987), a project directed by her mother that did not achieve commercial or critical success. Her solo career began with the album When You're a Boy (1991), followed by Susanna Hoffs in 1996. While neither album matched the success of the Bangles, they did feature two charting singles in the US: the Top 40 hit "My Side of the Bed" and "All I Want." In addition, she recorded songs for various films and was part of the mock British 1960s band Ming Tea, collaborating with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet, which made appearances in all three Austin Powers films. Hoffs partnered with Sweet to release three albums filled with cover songs. Her album Someday came out in 2012, followed by the cover collections Bright Lights in 2021 and The Deep End in 2023. Recently, she published her first novel, This Bird Has Flown, a romantic comedy focused on a struggling musician, through Little Brown in 2023. The book garnered positive reviews, and Universal Pictures acquired the rights for a film adaptation. By January 2025, Susanna had garnered a following of 859,000 on Instagram and 410,100 on TikTok.
