Born in Long Beach, California, she is the daughter of Robyn, a homemaker, and Frank Thiessen, a landscape architect and park designer. She has two brothers: Todd, who works as an actor and cycling enthusiast, and Schuyler, her younger brother. Her paternal lineage traces to Germany while her mother's heritage combines Greek, Turkish and Welsh backgrounds. Thiessen has spoken about the significant influence of her brother Todd in her life, alongside her mother and grandmother, whom she considers her primary role models. During her formative years, she attended Cubberley Elementary followed by Marshall Junior High School, both located in Long Beach. By 1992, she had achieved top academic honors, graduating as valedictorian from Valley Professional High School in Studio City. Thiessen's youth involved extensive participation in beauty pageants, leading to her winning the Miss Junior America title in 1987 and securing victory in Teen magazine's modeling competition in 1988, appearing on that publication's cover. At fifteen, she successfully auditioned for Kelly Kapowski on Saved by the Bell, an opportunity promoted significantly by Teen magazine. Her portrayal resonated with audiences and industry professionals alike, earning her Young Artist Award nominations for Outstanding Young Ensemble Cast in 1989, 1991, and 1992, though she did not win. The program's tremendous popularity resulted in action figures being created for all six principal cast members. She reprised the Kelly Kapowski character in Saved by the Bell: The College Years. Beyond the main series, Thiessen appeared in Hawaiian Style, A Killer Among Friends, Son in Law, and Wedding in Las Vegas. During the show's run, she guest-starred on Charles in Charge, Married with Children, The Hogan Family, Step by Step, and The Powers That Be.
