Yvonne Romain — Biography
Yvonne Romain, born Yvonne Adelaide Warren in London, was a British actress who graced the screens of films and television throughout the late 1950s and 1960s. Of Maltese heritage, her early performing journey began at twelve years old in children's programs and repertory theater, before she honed her skills at the Italia Conti Academy. Romain commenced her film career in her late teens, her striking, dark features and a noteworthy figure often leading to her being cast as Italian or Spanish characters, typically maids, in war films and comedies.
She is perhaps most recognized for her contributions to British horror cinema. Her roles included appearances in Corridors of Blood (1958), sharing the screen with Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee, and Circus of Horrors (1960). She also featured in Devil Doll (1964). A standout performance was in The Curse of the Werewolf (1961), where she acted alongside Oliver Reed in his inaugural significant film part. In this movie, Romain portrayed a silent servant girl who rejects the unwanted advances of a cruel marqués. Hammer Films cleverly utilized Romain's striking looks for promotional material, staging photographs of her in classic "scream queen" poses with a made-up Reed, despite them having no shared scenes.
Her most substantial role, likely, was in another Hammer production, Captain Clegg (1962), known as Night Creatures in the United States. In this film, she reunited with Oliver Reed, this time as his character's fiancée, and also appeared with Peter Cushing. Romain shared the screen with Sean Connery on two occasions: in Action of the Tiger (1957) and the gangster drama The Frightened City (1961), where she received co-star billing with the future James Bond actor. She also participated in a Danger Man episode titled "Sabotage" in 1961 and the 1964 mystery film Smokescreen, alongside Peter Vaughan. Oliver Reed proved to be Romain's most frequent on-screen collaborator. They would work together again in an installment of The Saint, "The King of the Beggars," and for a fourth and final time in The Brigand of Kandahar (1965). Under the name 'Yvonne Warren,' she played the second sister in the "Sir Bliant" episode of the television series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot. Romain also auditioned for the part of Jill Masterson in the James Bond film Goldfinger, a role eventually given to Shirley Eaton.
Later in her career, Romain relocated to Los Angeles, appearing in The Swinger (1966) with Ann-Margret and Double Trouble (1967) with Elvis Presley. While she described the latter film as "dreadful," she found the experience enjoyable. Following a period away from acting, Romain returned from semi
