Charlotte Church — Biography
Charlotte Church, a Welsh talent renowned for her singing, acting, and television hosting, first captured public attention in her youth as a classical vocalist. This early success paved the way for her transition into the pop music scene in 2005. By 2007, her global record sales had surpassed 10 million, with over 5 million of those sales originating in the United States. Her estimated net worth was reported in 2010 to be as high as £11 million, although a 2003 assessment had placed it at £25 million. Church also helmed her own chat show on Channel 4, known as The Charlotte Church Show. In October 2010, she released her first album in five years, titled Back to Scratch. Possessing a soprano vocal range, Church has occasionally courted controversy through her outspoken comments, once admitting to Davina McCall that diplomacy was not inherent in her personality. Earlier, at age 15, she drew criticism for remarks made following the September 11, 2001 attacks, though she later clarified in her Leveson Inquiry statement that her words were taken out of context. During a pilot episode of her talk show, The Charlotte Church Show, she again stirred anger by referring to Pope Benedict XVI as a "Nazi" and mocking Catholicism, leading Ignatius Press, a major Catholic publisher, to remove her music from their listings. In a January 2011 interview with Esquire magazine, Church made a disparaging remark about Queen Elizabeth II, calling her "an old woman who has no idea what's going on," but issued an apology within days. She has expressed a belief that she would be a more discerning judge on the reality show X-Factor than the existing panel, feeling "annoyed" by their inaccurate assessments of vocalists and musicians, and later criticized the show for "cheapening music." Church has two children with her former boyfriend, Gavin Henson: a daughter, Ruby, born in September 2007, and a son, Dexter, born in January 2009. The couple separated in mid-2010. She later began a relationship with musician Jonathan Powell, a collaborator on Back to Scratch and former employee of James and Maria Church, whom she met at The Robin Hood pub in Canton, Cardiff. They started dating in late 2010. In June 2017, Church experienced a miscarriage. Later that year, on October 4th, she and Powell were secretly married at a registry office in Cardiff. They later celebrated their union with an intimate ceremony at their home in Twyncyn, Dinas Powys, under a tree with family and friends. As of March 2024, her YouTube channel boasts 71,400 subscribers.
