Her sister, June Havoc, also an actress, entered the world in 1912. Their mother, Rose Thompson Hovick, was a woman who expertly manipulated her daughters' birth records, creating a shifting timeline of their ages. She would present them as older to bypass stringent child labor regulations across different states, and then as younger to secure cheaper or complimentary train passage.
