Joan Martha Van Ark, born June 16, 1943, is an American actress celebrated for her portrayal of Valene Ewing in the television drama Knots Landing. A dedicated member of The Actors Studio, she made her mark on Broadway in 1966 with Barefoot in the Park. Her theatrical achievements include a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1971 for her role in The School for Wives revival.
Van Ark achieved widespread recognition for her role as Valene Ewing, a character who first appeared on Dallas before becoming a central figure in its spin-off, Knots Landing, for thirteen seasons from 1979 to 1992. Her performance earned her two Soap Opera Digest Awards for Best Actress in 1986 and 1989. Although she departed the series in 1992, she returned for its concluding episodes in 1993 and a 1997 miniseries, Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac. In 1985, her work hosting the Tournament of Roses Parade on CBS garnered a Daytime Emmy nomination. From 2004 to 2005, she was a part of the cast of The Young and the Restless. She revisited her iconic role of Valene in a 2013 episode of the new Dallas series.

Her father was involved in advertising, public relations, and photography, contributing to publications like Collier's and The New Yorker. A descendant of a Dutch immigrant who settled in Holland, Michigan, Carroll Van Ark was also a writer, as was Joan's mother. After 1952, Joan grew up in Boulder, Colorado, with her three siblings: Carol, Mark, and Dexter.
At the age of fifteen, while working as a student reporter, Van Ark had a formative encounter with actress Julie Harris. Harris, a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, suggested that Van Ark apply to the same institution. Following this advice, Van Ark secured a scholarship to Yale, becoming one of the select few admitted to the graduate program in 1964 without an undergraduate degree and reportedly the sole female student on campus. Her time at Yale was brief, lasting only one year. Years later, Harris joined the cast of Knots Landing, playing the mother of Van Ark's character. Following Harris's death in 2013, Van Ark announced the establishment of the Julie Harris Scholarship for aspiring actors at Yale Drama, with Alec Baldwin making the initial contribution. In 2021, Yale Drama became tuition-free and was renamed the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University.
