Kamala Harris — Biography

Kamala Devi Harris is a prominent American figure in Democratic politics and the legal field. Her tenure as the 49th vice president of the United States spanned from 2021 to 2025, serving alongside President Joe Biden. Prior to that, from 2017 to 2021, she held a seat as a U.S. senator representing California. Her career in public service also includes significant roles as the attorney general of California from 2011 to 2017 and as the district attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

As the attorney general for California, Harris championed initiatives such as the Division of Recidivism Reduction and Re-Entry and the Back on Track LA program, which aimed to provide educational and job training for individuals convicted of nonviolent offenses. However, her tenure also drew criticism for her office's defense of the state's stance in cases of wrongful conviction and for its policies regarding prison labor.

In April 2023, President Joe Biden declared his intention to seek reelection, with Harris as his running mate. Following the Democratic primaries, they emerged as the party's chosen candidates for the 2024 presidential election. Throughout Biden's first term, questions surrounding his age and health were a persistent topic, gaining renewed attention after his performance in the first presidential debate on June 27. On July 21, 2024, Biden withdrew from the presidential race, endorsing Harris to continue the campaign. Notably, Harris became the first presidential nominee since Hubert Humphrey in 1968 to not have participated in the primaries. Harris ultimately lost the 2024 United States presidential election to Donald Trump, conceding the following day in a speech delivered at her alma mater, Howard University. The electoral college results showed a 226 to 312 vote in favor of Trump, with the popular vote tally at 48.3% for Harris and 49.8% for Trump. Harris's defeat was seen as part of a broader global trend of voters rejecting incumbent parties in 2024, influenced in part by the inflation surge experienced between 2021 and 2023, which saw all 50 states and Washington D.C. shift rightward in their presidential election outcomes compared to 2020. On January 6, 2025, in her capacity as president of the Senate, Harris presided over the official certification of Trump and J.D. Vance as the election victors.

Kamala Harris's heritage is a blend of Asian, Indian, and Jamaican backgrounds. As of March 2025, she maintains a significant online presence, with approximately 19.6 million followers on Instagram, 9.2 million on TikTok, and 864,
