Margaret Qualley, born Sarah Margaret Qualley, is an accomplished American actress who began her career in 2013 with the drama film Palo Alto. She achieved substantial recognition through her supporting performance in the HBO drama series The Leftovers, which ran from 2014 to 2017. Throughout the late 2010s, she built an impressive filmography that includes The Nice Guys from 2016, the 2017 adaptation of Death Note, and the acclaimed 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She also lent her talents to the 2019 video game Death Stranding.
Her career reached new heights with two highly praised television projects that earned her Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She portrayed legendary dancer Ann Reinking in the FX miniseries Fosse/Verdon in 2019, and subsequently starred as the lead character in the Netflix miniseries Maid in 2021, for which she received critical recognition.
More recently, Qualley has collaborated with director Yorgos Lanthimos on two films: Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, released in 2023 and 2024 respectively. She also appeared in the provocative 2024 body horror film The Substance.
Qualley comes from a family with Norwegian and Scottish heritage. Her mother is the well-known actress and model Andie MacDowell, and her sister, Rainey Qualley, works as both a musician and actress.
