Marilyn Ann Taylor, who performed under the stage name Marilyn Chambers, was an American adult film performer, dancer, model, and actress who also ran as a vice-presidential candidate. She gained prominence through her 1972 explicit film debut, Behind the Green Door, and the 1980 production Insatiable, establishing herself as one of the earliest figures in the adult entertainment industry.

Before entering adult films, Chambers worked as a model and actress in mainstream productions. In the early 1970s, Procter & Gamble selected her photograph for Ivory Snow detergent boxes, featuring her as a wholesome young mother with an infant. This image became closely tied to the brand's marketing of purity until the company discovered she had relocated to San Francisco and begun performing in adult films, leading to considerable embarrassment for the corporation.

Chambers had not initially planned to work in explicit content. After struggling to advance her mainstream acting and modeling career, she relocated to San Francisco in 1970 and eventually worked as a topless dancer in various establishments. At age twenty in 1972, she answered what she believed to be a standard film audition but discovered it was for an adult production. Despite initial hesitation about the impact on her future mainstream prospects, Jim and Artie Mitchell, owners of the O'Farrell Theatre, convinced her to participate after agreeing to her requested compensation of ten percent of gross earnings. The resulting film, directed by the Mitchell brothers, featured the first interracial scene in pornography.

Following her revelation about the Ivory Snow advertisement, the Mitchells capitalized on this connection in promoting the film, resulting in significant publicity and industry recognition for Chambers. She subsequently appeared in various adult productions while attempting mainstream crossover work, most notably in David Cronenberg's 1977 film Rabid, which earned critical recognition for her acting ability. She also released a disco single titled "Benihana" in 1976 and pursued performance art endeavors during the 1980s.

Chambers' subsequent adult films became increasingly graphic and less narrative-driven. In 1980, she earned fifteen percent of gross revenue plus $250,000 for Insatiable, equivalent to approximately one million dollars in current currency, contributing to its status as one of the highest-grossing adult films ever made. She later recorded a series called Marilyn Chambers Private Fantasies for Caballero Home Video, which released sixteen videos through 1987.
