Marisa Tomei is a well-known American actress recognized for her exceptional talent in film and theater. She shot to fame with her comedic role in My Cousin Vinny (1992), a performance that brought her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Tomei was also nominated for this prestigious award for her performances in In the Bedroom (2001) and The Wrestler (2008). Her early career included roles in the soap opera As the World Turns (1983–1985) and the first series of the sitcom A Different World (1987).
Throughout her career, she has appeared in several significant films, including Chaplin (1992), The Paper (1994), What Women Want (2000), Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), Wild Hogs (2007), The Wrestler (2008), The Ides of March (2011), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), Parental Guidance (2012), The Big Short (2015), and The King of Staten Island (2020). In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she plays the role of May Parker, starting with Captain America: Civil War (2016) and continuing through Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
Tomei is also a founding member of the Naked Angels Theater Company. She made her off-Broadway debut in John Morgan Evans’ Daughters (1986) before stepping onto Broadway in the production of Wait Until Dark alongside Quentin Tarantino (1998). Her portrayal in Top Girls (2008) earned her a nomination for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, and she received a special Drama Desk Award for her work in Will Eno's The Realistic Joneses (2014). She returned to Broadway with a revival of The Rose Tattoo in 2019.
Between 2008 and 2012, Tomei was romantically involved with actor Logan Marshall-Green, and although there were speculations about an engagement, a spokesperson for Tomei dismissed those rumors. She has never been married and expressed in 2009 that she is not particularly fond of marriage as an institution, questioning society's view on women needing to have children for fulfillment.
Tomei has been active in promoting voting rights, bringing attention to Voter ID assistance through VoteRiders. She has also participated in two genealogy-themed shows: Who Do You Think You Are? and the PBS program Finding Your Roots, where her family tree was mapped and her DNA analyzed. During Moore’s appearance on Finding Your Roots, it was revealed that Tomei and her friend, actress Julianne Moore, are cousins. Of Sicilian and Tuscan Italian heritage, Tomei has gained a substantial following, with approximately 2.1 million followers on Instagram as of November 2024.
