Queen Elizabeth II — Biography

Elizabeth II, born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, held the position of Queen of the United Kingdom and numerous other Commonwealth nations from early 1952 until her passing in 2022. During her extensive time on the throne, she was the reigning monarch of 32 distinct sovereign states, and at the end of her life, she still presided over 15 realms. Her reign, extending beyond seven decades, stands as the longest tenure for any British sovereign, the longest by a female monarch globally, and ranks as the second-longest verified reign of any sovereign ruler in history.

Born in London's Mayfair district during the reign of her paternal grandfather, King George V, Elizabeth was the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who would later become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Her father's ascension to the throne in 1936, following his brother Edward VIII's abdication, designated the ten-year-old Princess Elizabeth as the presumptive heir. Her education was conducted privately at home, and she commenced her public service during World War II, participating in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In November 1947, she wed Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, a union that endured for 73 years until his death in 2021. Together, they had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward.

Upon her father's death in February 1952, Elizabeth, then 25, became queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries—the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)—and also assumed the role of Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth served as a constitutional monarch through significant periods of change, including the Troubles in Northern Ireland, devolution within the UK, the decolonization of Africa, and the UK's involvement with the European Communities, as well as its eventual departure. The number of realms under her dominion fluctuated as territories gained independence and some transitioned into republics. Throughout her reign, Elizabeth was advised by more than 170 prime ministers across her various realms. Her numerous historic engagements included state visits to China in 1986, Russia in 1994, and the Republic of Ireland in 2011, alongside meetings with five popes and fourteen US presidents. Notable moments of her reign included her coronation in 1953 and the celebrations marking her Silver, Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilees in 1977, 2002, 2012, and 2022, respectively.

Despite facing intermittent republican sentiment and media scrutiny of her family, particularly after the dissolution of her children's marriages, her difficult year in 1992, and the passing of her former daughter-in-law Diana in 199
