Born Judith Ellen Light on February 9, 1949, this American performer embarked on her acting journey with a professional stage appearance in 1970. Her ascent continued with her introduction to the Broadway stage in 1975, participating in a revival of A Doll's House. A pivotal moment arrived in her career with the ABC daytime drama One Life to Live, where her portrayal of Karen Wolek from 1977 to 1983 garnered her significant acclaim, including two back-to-back Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1980 and 1981. More recently, in 2024, Light earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Poker Face. Audiences also came to know her as Angela Bower, the lead in the enduring ABC sitcom Who's the Boss?, a role she held from 1984 to 1992. Her television credits further include the recurring character of Elizabeth Donnelly in the NBC legal series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from 2002 to 2010, and Claire Meade in the ABC comedy-drama Ugly Betty from 2006 to 2010, a performance that secured her a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2007. From 2013 to 2014, she embraced the role of the antagonist Judith Brown Ryland in the TNT drama Dallas. In 2014, Light began a notable tenure as Shelly Pfefferman in the highly regarded Amazon Studios dark comedy-drama Transparent, a role that led to multiple nominations for Golden Globe, Primetime Emmy, and Critics' Choice Awards. She received further Primetime Emmy and Critics' Choice Award nominations in 2018 for her depiction of Marilyn Miglin in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. In 2019, her career was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
