Katharine Hope McPhee, born March 25, 1984, is a multifaceted American artist known for her contributions to pop and R&B music, her songwriting endeavors, her acting roles, her modeling work, and her presence in the television world. Her rise to prominence came through her participation in the fifth season of the Fox reality competition American Idol, where she ultimately secured the position of runner-up.
McPhee's self-titled debut album achieved significant commercial success, entering the Billboard Top 200 at number two and selling 378,000 copies. The album's initial single, "Over It," was certified Gold in 2008. Beyond her music career, she also developed a presence in film, notably in the 2008 movie The House Bunny, where she played a supporting role. Her second album, Unbroken, was released on October 6, 2009, through Verve Forecast Records.
Originally from Los Angeles, California, McPhee relocated with her family to Sherman Oaks at the age of twelve. Her passion for singing began at the remarkably young age of two. Her mother, Patricia Burch McPhee, professionally known as Peisha Arten, a vocal coach and accomplished cabaret singer, recognized her daughter's innate musical abilities and took on the role of her instructor. Katharine's father, Daniel McPhee, works as a television producer. She has an older sister named Adriana. McPhee's heritage includes Irish, Scottish, and German ancestry.
During her time at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, where she graduated in 2002, McPhee actively participated in school theater productions. She continued her education at the Boston Conservatory for three semesters, focusing on musical theater. However, she departed from the institution on the advice of her manager to return to Los Angeles and pursue opportunities in television.
McPhee has openly discussed her past struggles with eating disorders. She shared with People Magazine that she began restricting her food intake and exercising excessively at age thirteen, developing bulimia by seventeen. Weight gain occurred during college due to binge eating. After seven years of grappling with these issues, she entered a three-month rehabilitation program following her successful audition for American Idol. Her treatment concluded just before the Idol semifinals commenced in February 2006. During her time on the show, she experienced a weight loss of thirty pounds, attributing it to improved eating habits as part of her recovery. As she revealed to Teen Vogue in May 2007, she now enjoys her cravings but is mindful of portion sizes.
Katharine and her sister made an appearance on the inaugural episode of The Dr. Keith Ablow Show on September 18, 2006, to discuss McPhee's experiences with bulimia and a childhood fear of her father. On the program, she also
