Moriah Pereira — Biography
Moriah Rose Pereira, born January 1, 1995, and recognized in the entertainment world as Poppy, began her career under the moniker That Poppy. She is an American artist known for her work as a singer, songwriter, musician, and presence on YouTube. Her initial surge to prominence occurred in 2014, propelled by performance art videos where she embodied an android-like figure, unsettlingly close to human yet distinctly artificial. In these pieces, she offered commentary and satire on internet culture and contemporary society. By 2015, she secured a recording agreement with Island Records, leading to the release of her first EP, Bubblebath, in 2016. The following year, Poppy inked a deal with Mad Decent, subsequently releasing her debut full-length album, Poppy.Computer, a collection of art pop and bubblegum pop tracks. She supported this release with the Poppy.Computer Tour. In 2018, a pilot episode for a planned surreal comedy web series titled I'm Poppy was unveiled on YouTube Premium. This year also saw the release of her second studio album, Am I a Girl?. Marking a significant departure from her earlier sound, the latter portion of Am I a Girl? began to exhibit a strong nu metal influence. In 2020, Poppy transitioned to Sumerian Records, issuing her third studio album, I Disagree. This record embraced heavy metal and industrial rock genres. The visual elements accompanying the songs on I Disagree were noted by some reviewers for their unsettling, violent, and macabre nature, continuing a trend in her music videos that had commenced with her second album. In 2021, Poppy's song "Bloodmoney" earned a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. That same year, she continued her ongoing collaboration with WWE NXT, the professional wrestling promotion, by releasing the metalcore soundtrack EP Eat (NXT Soundtrack). Her fourth studio album, Flux, arrived three months later, garnering positive reviews and presenting a less abrasive, more pared-down sonic palette compared to I Disagree and Eat.
