Paulina Porizkova — Biography

Pavlina Elisa Porizkova entered the world on April 9, 1965, in Prostějov, Czechoslovakia, born to Anna Pořízková, a midwife, and Jiří Pořízek, a physician. When her parents escaped the repressive Soviet regime in 1968, she was initially raised by her grandmother in her homeland until she reached the age of seven. It was then that she reunited with her family in Lund, Sweden, after they were granted political asylum. Growing up in a working-class household alongside her younger brother Jachym, she often encountered financial hardships and bullying due to her status as a refugee. At 15, a photographer friend recognized her potential and shared her photos with Elite Model Management, paving her way into the modeling world. In 1980, she made her move to Paris to further her modeling aspirations. Although of Czech heritage, Porizkova spent her formative years in Sweden before eventually relocating to the U.S., where she has since resided for most of her life. She holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Sweden and is primarily recognized as Paulina Porizkova, without any notable pseudonyms. In the 1980s, the media often referred to her as "The Czech Siren," celebrating her remarkable beauty and Eastern European roots.

She graced over 200 magazine covers, including prestigious publications like Vogue (U.S., French, German), Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, for which she was featured on the cover in both 1984 and 1985. Her career trajectory took off with a 1983 Vogue cover captured by Irving Penn. She became a sought-after name in campaigns for iconic brands such as Chanel, Estée Lauder, Oscar de la Renta, and Revlon, showcasing her talent on the runways of renowned designers like Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, and Thierry Mugler. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she chose not to collaborate with Victoria’s Secret, instead focusing on high-end fashion and beauty brands. Highlights of her career include her 1987 cover for Harper’s Bazaar and her appearance in the 1988 issue of Playboy. She continues to make waves in the modeling world, recently appearing in Vogue Czechoslovakia (2023) and being part of Dior's 2024 campaign.
