Sobre Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman, born Uma Karuna Thurman on April 29, 1970, in Boston, is a prominent American actress and model known for her striking height and notable figure. By April 2024, she had garnered 1.4 million followers on her Instagram account. Her mother, Nena Birgitte Caroline von Schlebrügge, was a fashion model who came into the world in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1941. Nena's parents were German Friedrich Karl Johannes von Schlebrügge and Birgit Holmquist, a Swedish model from Trelleborg. In 1930, Birgit Holmquist was featured in a nude statue that stands near the harbor of Smygehuk. Uma's father, Robert Alexander Farrar Thurman, was born in New York City. He was the son of Elizabeth Dean Farrar, who was a stage actress, and Beverly Reid Thurman, Jr., an editor with the Associated Press and a U.N. translator.

Nena was introduced to Timothy Leary, known for his experiments with LSD, by the artist Salvador Dalí. She married Leary in 1964 but later wed Uma's father in 1967. Robert, a scholar and professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies at Columbia University, made history as the first Westerner to become a Tibetan Buddhist monk. He raised his children in the Buddhist faith, which influenced Uma's name, taken from an important Tibetan figure known as Dbuma Chenpo, and pronounced /umə/ in General American. Uma is the eldest of four siblings, including Ganden (born 1971), Dechen (born 1973), and Mipam (born 1978), as well as a half-sister, Taya (born 1960), from her father's first marriage. As children, Uma and her brothers spent time in Almora, India, where they occasionally welcomed visits from the Dalai Lama.

Her breakthrough performance came as Cecile de Volanges in the film Dangerous Liaisons (1988), which ignited media attention, particularly regarding her figure at 19 years old. The spotlight grew even brighter with her role in the NC-17 film Henry & June (1990), which featured intimate scenes. However, it was her portrayal of Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's iconic Pulp Fiction (1994) that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. With a distinctive black wig, she solidified her place in cinematic history opposite John Travolta’s character, Vincent Vega.

Following performances in The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) and Beautiful Girls (1996), Uma met her future husband, Ethan Hawke, while filming Gattaca (1997). After portraying Poison Ivy in the critically panned Batman & Robin (1997) and Emma Peel in The Avengers (1998), she worked with Woody Allen and Sean Penn on Sweet and Lowdown (1999)
