Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, commonly referred to as AOC, is a progressive member of Congress representing New York City at the federal level. Since 2019, she has held the seat for the 14th Congressional district as a Democrat. On June 26, 2018, Ocasio-Cortez achieved national prominence by winning the Democratic primary for New York's 14th district. Her victory over Joe Crowley, the Democratic Caucus Chair and a legislator with ten consecutive terms, was widely regarded as the most significant upset in the 2018 midterm primary races. She subsequently secured victory in the general election against Republican candidate Anthony Pappas by a substantial margin. Her tenure has included successful reelection campaigns in both 2020 and 2022. During September 2021, the American Accountability Foundation submitted an ethics complaint regarding Ocasio-Cortez's attendance at the Met Gala. The foundation contended that accepting the approximately $35,000 ticket, which was financed by Condé Nast rather than a charitable organization, constituted receiving an improper gift. Working alongside Rashida Tlaib, Ocasio-Cortez champions policies rooted in progressive ideology, encompassing workplace democracy, universal Medicare coverage, free college tuition, federal employment initiatives, environmental protection through a Green New Deal, and dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She belongs to "The Squad," a collective of progressive House legislators that includes Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, and Summer Lee. As of February 2026, she maintains 9.6 million Instagram followers, 3.2 million followers on TikTok, 335,000 YouTube subscribers, and 911,000 followers on her Twitch channel.
